This is a suggested itinerary to arrange yourself. Wadi visits, road transport, camp stays and meals are separate from the one-hour FOXATVs adventure. Sunset departures depend on availability.
A visit to Sharqiya Sands does not have to mean arriving at a camp and waiting for sunset.
One of the most rewarding day structures combines water, mountain scenery, the road into North Al Sharqiyah and an active desert experience.
Morning: Wadi Bani Khalid
Start early at Wadi Bani Khalid.
The wadi creates a strong contrast with the desert you will see later: mountains, water, palm trees and natural pathways.
Give yourself enough time to enjoy it without rushing, especially if you have a fixed desert booking later in the day.
Afternoon: continue toward Bidiyah
From Wadi Bani Khalid, head toward Bidiyah and Sharqiya Sands.
Before entering the desert area, check the exact meeting location for your camp or activity. Do not rely on a generic “Wahiba Sands” map search because access points differ.
If you are driving a normal car, confirm where you should park before reaching soft sand.
Before sunset: drive the dunes yourself
Instead of only looking at the desert, spend part of the day behind the wheel.
FOXATVs offers a one-hour dune experience with three current options:
- Co-Pilot: OMR 35 per person.
- Captain: OMR 75 per two-seat vehicle.
- Elite Pro: OMR 98 per two-seat vehicle.
First-time dune drivers receive instruction before departure and follow the guide on the route.
After the drive: sunset or camp
If your timing works, continue to your desert camp or enjoy sunset according to your own arrangements.
If your camp is inside the dunes, coordinate the final approach with the property in advance. Many camps use their own meeting or transfer arrangements.
Keep the day comfortable
Do not overpack the schedule.
Leave margin between the wadi and your desert booking for driving, fuel, food and finding the correct meeting point.
The goal is not to collect as many attractions as possible. The transition from wadi to desert is part of what makes an Oman road trip memorable.
Should you book the dune drive in advance?
Yes if you want a particular time, especially around sunset or on busy weekends.
The main FOXATVs sand season runs from September to April.

Do I need dune-driving experience?
No. FOXATVs provides instruction before departure and a guide on the route. A valid driving licence is required for self-drive dune experiences.
How much does Desert Rush cost?
Co-Pilot costs OMR 35 per person. Captain costs OMR 75 and Elite Pro OMR 98 per two-seat vehicle. Driving time is one hour.
How do I arrange arrival?
Use the current FOXATVs meeting instructions. In a standard car, confirm parking or pickup before the soft-sand approach.
