For many visitors, the cooler months are the most comfortable starting point for an Oman off-road expedition. FOX ATVS route notes favour February to April for an all-round mountain, wadi and desert journey, with the actual departure assessed around conditions. Mountain nights, lowland heat and water levels can differ sharply within the same two days. Choose a date for the whole route, not only the forecast in Muscat.
February to April: a useful planning window.
The appeal is balance: long outdoor days are generally more manageable than in the hottest months, while the mountain can still feel cool, particularly at night. Treat this as route-planning guidance rather than a promise of a particular temperature.
Oman’s official tourism guidance describes winter as November to early March and highlights the milder mountain climate compared with the lowlands. February–April therefore spans the end of winter and spring, rather than being one fixed weather season. See Experience Oman’s seasonal overview.
Do not pack for the desert alone.
A route climbing toward roughly 2,000 metres can feel very different from the day’s lowland start. Wind, darkness and sitting at camp after hours of driving all affect comfort.
Bring a warm layer for the overnight stop and exposed high trails, as well as closed shoes, suitable outdoor clothing and sun protection. Ask the team about the selected campsite and current packing advice before travelling.
Cloud views are a possibility, not a departure guarantee.
The supplied FOX ATVS route notes describe cloud layers around higher tracks on some departures between roughly August and December. When conditions align, the mountain can sit above or beside the cloud, creating a very different view from a clear winter day.
This is an observation from the trail, not a dependable cloud season or a forecast for your booking. August heat still matters in the lowlands. Do not choose a hot-weather departure solely for the chance of an above-cloud photograph; ask the team whether the full route is suitable for your date and group.
Summer needs a different plan.
Elevation can make some mountain sections cooler, but it does not remove exposure to heat elsewhere in the journey. Start times, hydration, exposed stops, the route and even whether a departure can operate need assessment.
If your dates fall in the hottest period, discuss them before booking. Personal comfort and the demands of prolonged driving matter. Anyone uncertain about the effects of heat, vibration, altitude or exertion should seek professional medical advice.
Wadis and dunes have conditions of their own.
Rain can change a wadi crossing; wind and visibility can alter the desert phase. The guide assesses the actual route and may adjust or omit sections. Water crossings, swimming and particular viewpoints cannot be promised for every departure.

- Confirm whether you want the Wahiba Sands finish or a return to Al Jarda.
- Ask about current route and camp conditions—not only typical seasonal weather.
- Pack warm and sun-protective layers, and keep your onward schedule flexible.

What is the best month? There is no guaranteed best month. February–April is a useful FOX ATVS planning window; the right departure depends on current conditions and your needs.
Can I travel outside winter? Possibly, subject to route and operational assessment. Ask the team before committing.
Can I book a guaranteed drive above the clouds? No. Clouds are weather-dependent.
Will rain cancel the trip? Conditions may require a route change, postponement or another operational decision. The team confirms what can run safely for the selected departure.
