Search for things to do in Sharqiya Sands and you will find options that sound similar from a distance: 4×4 dune tours, quad bikes and dune buggies or side-by-sides.
They are not the same experience.

4×4 desert tour with a driver
Here, you sit in the vehicle while an experienced driver handles the dunes.
It can be a good fit if you:
- Want to relax.
- Are travelling as a family group.
- Want to cover more ground without driving.
- Prefer to focus on views and photography.
The defining feature is that the driving responsibility belongs to someone else.
Quad bike
A quad is smaller and more exposed, with the rider sitting on top rather than inside a vehicle.
It can suit guests who want a direct, open-air ride, but the handling, power and overall sensation are very different from a side-by-side.
Routes, machines and safety standards also vary by operator, so “quad biking” is not one standardised desert product.
Side-by-side dune buggy
A side-by-side places you inside the vehicle with steering wheel and pedals, with a passenger seat beside you.
On a FOXATVs self-drive experience, you follow a guide through the dunes rather than receiving a machine and heading into the desert alone.
That combines two things:

What changes when you drive yourself?
As a passenger in a 4×4, you feel what the driver does.
Behind the wheel of a buggy, you control acceleration, steering and how the machine responds to changing sand.
That makes the experience more participatory.
What if you do not want to drive?
You can still choose the Co-Pilot option and ride beside a FOXATVs driver.
What if performance matters to you?
The Elite Pro option uses a higher-performance category above 150 hp, depending on current fleet allocation.
That is aimed at guests who care about how the machine performs on the dunes, not simply reaching a viewpoint.
Which should you choose?
Choose a driver-led 4×4 safari if comfort and sightseeing are your priority.
Choose a quad bike if you prefer a smaller, exposed machine.
Choose a self-drive side-by-side if the driving itself is a major part of what you want to experience.
Choose Co-Pilot if you want the sensation of a performance buggy without taking the wheel.
Questions before your desert day
Do I need dune-driving experience?
No. FOXATVs provides instruction before departure and a guide on the route. A valid driving licence is required for self-drive dune experiences.
How much does Desert Rush cost?
Co-Pilot costs OMR 35 per person. Captain costs OMR 75 and Elite Pro OMR 98 per two-seat vehicle. Driving time is one hour.
How do I arrange arrival?
Use the current FOXATVs meeting instructions. In a standard car, confirm parking or pickup before the soft-sand approach.
